Railing Terminology

45 stainless steel and glass railing terms explained in plain language — the vocabulary used on drawings, quotations and site, from balustrade and spigot through to arris, pitch line and running foot.

A

Anchor
The fixing that transfers railing load into the structure. Mechanical anchors grip by expanding in the hole; chemical anchors bond with an injected resin, and are used where edge distances are tight.
Annealed glass
Ordinary untreated float glass, which breaks into large sharp shards. It is never acceptable in a balustrade — barrier glass must be toughened, laminated or both.
Anodizing
An electrochemical finish that builds a hard oxide layer on aluminium/stainless for improved hardness and colour retention.
Arris
The exposed edge of a glass pane. Balustrade glass is ground and polished on any visible edge so it is safe to touch and far less likely to chip.

B

Baluster
A vertical post or spindle supporting the handrail in a traditional (non-glass) railing.
Balustrade
A complete railing barrier — the infill (glass or balusters) plus the top handrail — that guards an edge such as a staircase, balcony or landing.
Base channel
Also called a base shoe — the U-shaped profile that runs along the floor line and clamps the bottom edge of the glass in a continuous system.
Bracket system
A railing system using individual point brackets at intervals to hold the glass or rail — economical and easy to service.
Bracket with continuous cover
A hybrid system: point brackets carry the load, then a continuous cover profile runs over them so the finished run reads as one unbroken line.

C

Centres
The on-centre spacing between consecutive brackets or spigots along a run. Centres are set against panel size and design load, not fixed by habit.
Concealed system
A railing system recessed into the slab so the channel and every fixing sit below finished floor level, leaving the glass appearing to rise straight out of the floor.
Continuous system
A railing system where a continuous base channel runs the full floor line and grips the glass edge, giving a seamless look and even load distribution.
Core-drilled spigot
A spigot set into a pocket cut into the slab, so only a slim post shows above the floor. It has to be planned before the floor finish is laid.

D

Deflection
How far the top of a balustrade moves sideways under load. Limiting deflection is why base profiles get deeper as glass gets taller.

E

Electropolishing
An electrochemical process that smooths and brightens a stainless surface and improves its corrosion resistance by enriching the chromium in the surface layer.
End cap
The closure fitted to the exposed end of a handrail or base profile, finishing the section and keeping water and debris out.

F

Fascia fixing
Fixing to the vertical face of a slab edge or stair stringer rather than the top surface — the defining feature of a side-mount system, which keeps the full floor width usable.

G

Gasket
The rubber or polymer wedge that grips and packs the glass inside a base channel. Gaskets are what actually clamp the pane once the glass is set.
Glass clamp
The bracket that grips a glass pane at a single point, bolting to a post, wall or slab. The basic component of a bracket system.
Guardrail
A barrier at a change of level whose job is to stop a fall. Distinct from a handrail, which is there to be gripped — a balustrade often performs both roles.

H

Horizontal load
The sideways force a barrier must resist from people leaning or pushing against it. The required load rises with occupancy, which is why public and commercial barriers are engineered harder than domestic ones.

I

Infill
Whatever fills the space between the floor and the handrail — glass panels, balusters, mesh or perforated sheet.

L

Laminated glass
Two or more glass panes bonded with an interlayer so fragments stay in place if broken — preferred for elevated balustrades that must retain load after breakage.
Low-iron glass
Extra-clear glass made with reduced iron content, so it lacks the green cast visible in the edge of ordinary float glass. Specified where colour neutrality matters.

M

Matt finish
A brushed satin finish with a soft directional grain. It hides fingerprints and light scratching far better than mirror, which makes it the practical choice for handrails in constant use.
Mirror finish
A high-polish reflective finish. It looks premium in interiors and showrooms but shows fingerprints and water spots, so it suits low-touch feature areas.

N

NBC 2016
The National Building Code of India, which together with the relevant IS standards and local authority rules governs barrier heights, loads and safety glazing for railings in India.
Newel post
The main structural post at the start, turn or end of a staircase balustrade, into which the handrail is terminated.

P

Passivation
A chemical treatment that removes free iron left on a stainless surface by fabrication, restoring the passive chromium-oxide layer that gives stainless its corrosion resistance.
Pitch line
The notional line joining the stair nosings. Staircase handrail height is measured vertically from this line, not from the tread.
Pitting corrosion
Localised pin-hole corrosion caused by chlorides breaking through the passive layer. It is the specific failure mode SS 316 is chosen to resist in coastal and poolside work.
Powder coating
A durable, weather- and UV-resistant coloured finish applied as powder and cured — ideal for exposed and coastal railings.

R

RAL
The European colour-reference system used to specify a powder-coat colour exactly, so railings can be matched to window frames or facade elements.
Running foot
Abbreviated rft — one linear foot of finished railing run, and the unit Indian railing work is almost always quoted in.

S

Setting block
The rubber block the glass pane rests on inside a base channel, spreading the pane's weight and keeping it off the metal.
SS 304 / SS 316
Common stainless steel grades. SS 304 suits most indoor and covered use; SS 316 adds corrosion resistance for coastal or humid environments.
SS spigot
A stainless or aluminium-core post that clamps glass at points and is set into or onto the floor, common for frameless balustrades and pool fencing.
Standoff
A point fixing that holds a glass pane a short distance clear of a wall or face on a barrel-shaped body.
Stringer
The sloping structural member that carries the treads of a staircase, and a common fixing point for side-mount balustrades.
Substrate
The material a railing is fixed into — concrete slab, steel, or timber. It determines which anchors are valid and is checked before any system is specified.
Supported glass height
The maximum glass panel height a given base profile is rated to hold safely — larger, deeper profiles support taller glass.

T

Tea staining
Brown surface discolouration on stainless steel in coastal air. It is cosmetic rather than structural, but it is the usual sign that SS 304 was specified where SS 316 was needed.
Top handrail
The rail capping a balustrade, providing grip and protecting the glass edge — available in round, square, oval and rectangular profiles.
Toughened glass
Heat-treated (tempered) safety glass, several times stronger than ordinary glass, that crumbles into small blunt pieces if broken. Standard for glass balustrades.
Toughened-laminated glass
Glass that is both toughened and laminated. It is the safest balustrade specification because it is strong before breakage and still retains the fragments and some load capacity after it.
