Aluminium vs Stainless Steel Railing

Aluminium is roughly a third the weight of stainless steel, costs less and anodizes or powder-coats readily, which makes it common in base channels and spigot bodies. Stainless is stronger, handles coastal chlorides far better in the 316 grade, and is what structural fixings should be.

Both metals appear in the same railing, often in the same run, and they are not competing for the same job. Knowing which does what stops you paying for the wrong one.

Where each belongs

Aluminium earns its place where section size can do the work and weight is a disadvantage — extruded base channels, cover profiles and spigot bodies. An aluminium base shoe is easier to handle on site, cheaper per metre and takes a colour finish beautifully. Stainless steel is the right answer where strength, wear or corrosion decide it — clamp brackets that grip glass at a point, handrails that get touched constantly, and every structural fixing. SS 316 is what goes near salt water, and the reasoning is in the 304 vs 316 guide.

Mixing them

Aluminium and stainless steel in contact, with moisture present, form a galvanic couple and the aluminium corrodes preferentially. In practice a well-made system manages this with isolating washers, gaskets and coatings, which is another reason to use system components as supplied rather than substituting a fastener because it was to hand. Never put a carbon-steel bolt through either metal.

Near the coast

Anodized aluminium performs respectably in salt air and powder coating over it adds a further barrier, but the exposed fixings and brackets are still the weak point. On a coastal project, specify SS 316 for anything structural and treat every fastener as part of that decision. The short version

Aluminium for extruded profile where weight and cost matter and the section can be sized for the job. Stainless for anything that grips, carries, is gripped by a hand, or is exposed to chlorides. Most good railings use both, deliberately.
