Tea Staining on Stainless Steel Railings: Causes and Fixes

Tea staining is the brown surface discolouration that appears on stainless steel in coastal air, caused by chlorides settling on the metal. It is cosmetic rather than structural, it is removable, and it is usually the sign that SS 304 was specified where SS 316 was needed.
A railing near the sea develops a light brown film over a few months. It looks like rust, the client calls it rust, and it is not rust in the structural sense. It is tea staining, and both the cause and the cure are well understood.
What tea staining is
Airborne chlorides — salt carried inland on the wind — settle on the steel and concentrate as moisture evaporates. Where they sit long enough they break down the passive chromium-oxide film locally, and the discolouration follows. It affects the surface, not the section. The railing is not losing strength; it is losing its appearance.
It is most visible on sheltered faces, which is counter-intuitive until you think about it: rain washes exposed surfaces clean, so the undersides and the lee side of a profile stain first.
What makes it worse
- Proximity to the coast. The dominant factor. Risk falls off with distance but salt travels further than people expect on prevailing winds.
- The wrong grade. SS 304 has no molybdenum, and molybdenum is what resists chloride attack. This is the single biggest controllable factor.
- Surface roughness. A coarse or scratched finish holds contaminants; a smooth, well-polished surface sheds them and washes clean more readily.
- Sheltered positions that never get rinsed by rain.
- Infrequent cleaning. Chlorides that are washed off before they concentrate cannot do this.
- Contamination during installation — carbon-steel particles from grinding or wire brushing give corrosion somewhere to start.
Removing it
Light staining usually comes off with routine cleaning: warm water, mild detergent, soft cloth, wiped along the grain, then rinsed and dried. Work up from there only if you need to.
- Mild detergent and a non-abrasive cloth or nylon pad, along the grain.
- A proprietary stainless steel cleaner formulated for the purpose, following its instructions.
- A passivating or pickling treatment for stubborn staining. These remove surface contamination and restore the passive layer, and they are best done by someone who does it regularly — the chemicals are aggressive and the runoff needs handling.
Do not reach for steel wool or a wire brush. It will lift the stain and leave embedded iron particles that rust properly, turning a cosmetic problem into a real one. The full do-and-do-not list is in our cleaning guide.
Preventing it
- Specify SS 316 within reach of salt air. The molybdenum addition is precisely what resists chloride pitting, and it costs roughly 20–35% more than SS 304 — far less than refinishing a balustrade. See our 304 vs 316 guide.
- Choose a smoother finish. Mirror and fine satin hold less contamination than a coarse brushed surface.
- Consider powder coating over the steel where a coloured finish is acceptable — it puts a barrier between the chlorides and the metal. The trade-offs are in our finishes comparison.
- Rinse regularly with fresh water. Every two to four weeks near the coast, and more often on a sheltered elevation the rain never reaches.
- Keep carbon steel away during installation — separate tools, no grinding sparks landing on the finished surface.
The honest summary
Tea staining is a maintenance and specification issue, not a manufacturing defect. A coastal balustrade in SS 304 that is never washed will stain, and no amount of polishing at the factory changes that.
