Continuous vs Bracket Railing Systems: Which to Choose
Comparison · · By Prince Railing
A continuous base channel spreads load along the whole glass edge, giving the most seamless line and the best support for tall panels. Point brackets use less material, cost less, and let you service one panel on its own. Bracket-with-cover gets you both.
When you specify a glass balustrade, the biggest decision is how the glass is held: a continuous base channel that runs the full length, or point brackets at intervals. Both are strong and code-compliant — they just suit different priorities.
Appearance
A continuous system gives the cleanest, most seamless line because the fixing runs uninterrupted along the floor. A bracket system shows discrete fixing points, which some designs actually want for an industrial or lighter, more transparent look. If you like the bracket's structural honesty but want it hidden, the bracket-with-continuous-cover system gives you both.
Strength and load distribution
The continuous channel spreads load evenly along the whole edge, which helps with taller glass and higher design loads. Brackets concentrate load at points, so spacing and bracket size are engineered to the glass height and load. For the tallest panels, a deep continuous profile (rated up to 17.5–25 mm glass) is typically the stronger route.
Cost and installation
- Continuous — more material along the run, slightly higher cost, but fast, repeatable installation and a premium finish.
- Bracket — less material, usually the most economical, and very easy to service or replace a single point later.
Quick comparison
| Factor | Continuous | Bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Seamless, premium | Point-fixed, lighter |
| Tall glass | Excellent | Good (engineered spacing) |
| Cost | Higher | Most economical |
| Servicing | Section-based | Easy, per-point |
The verdict
Choose continuous for a seamless, premium look and taller glass; choose bracket for value and easy servicing; choose bracket-with-cover when you want both.
