Frameless vs Semi-Frameless Glass Railing

Frameless glass shows nothing above floor level but the pane itself, held by a base channel or spigots. Semi-frameless keeps visible hardware — brackets, posts or a top rail — which costs less per metre and makes a damaged panel far easier to replace.
Almost every glass balustrade decision comes down to how much hardware you are willing to see. That single choice drives the cost, the fixing requirements and how easy the run is to repair later.
Frameless
Nothing above floor level except glass. No posts, no visible framework, and no top rail unless one is added for grip. Two systems achieve it:
- Continuous base channel — the glass sits in an unbroken shoe running the length of the floor, so load spreads along the whole edge. This is what carries the tallest panels.
- Spigots — floor-mounted posts grip the pane at points. The most open look of all, and the highest demand on the substrate, because everything passes through a few small footprints.
Frameless costs the most, needs the best substrate and the most careful setting out, and gives a result nothing else matches on a view-facing balcony.
Semi-frameless
The hardware is part of the design rather than hidden:
- Point brackets — individual clamps at set centres. The most economical route to a glass balustrade, and the easiest to service.
- Side mount — fixed to the vertical face of the slab edge, which keeps the full floor width usable.
- Bracket with continuous cover — the middle route: brackets carry the load, a cover profile runs over them, and from normal viewing distance it reads as one clean line.

How to choose
- Is the view the point? If the glass exists so nobody looks at the railing, frameless earns its cost. If the railing is a safety barrier on an internal stair, it rarely does.
- What can the floor take? Spigots need a slab that can be drilled and can carry point loads. Where it cannot, side mount or brackets keep the job possible.
- Who maintains it? On a commercial run where panels get damaged, easy per-panel replacement is worth real money over the building's life.
- How tall is the glass? Taller panels want load spread along the edge, which is the continuous channel's advantage.
The middle option people forget
Bracket-with-continuous-cover is genuinely underused. You pay for hardware only at the fixing points, then a cover profile hides them, so the finished run looks continuous at the cost of a bracket system.
