Glass Railing Brackets: Types, Sizes and Which to Use

A glass railing bracket clamps the pane at points instead of along its whole edge. Prince Railing makes ten shapes — V, T, curved T, Turkey, step, L, ferry, 80 mm and 125 mm — and every one of them takes 12 mm toughened glass up to a 3 ft supported height.

A bracket system is the most economical way to build a glass balustrade. Instead of a continuous channel running the length of the floor, individual clamps grip the pane at set points and bolt straight into the slab, the wall or a stair stringer. You can see between the brackets, so the run stays visually light, and you only pay for hardware where the fixings actually are.

The bracket range compared

Every bracket below is machined for 12 mm toughened glass. Bracket length is the depth of the body that carries the load back into the substrate.

Because the glass rating and the supported height are the same across the range, the choice between them is a choice about shape and fixing face, not about strength. That is genuinely unusual and it makes specifying easier than it looks.

How to choose a bracket

  • The bracket is part of the finished look. Unlike a continuous channel, these are visible. V, T and Turkey profiles read as deliberate hardware; the flat 80 mm and 125 mm bodies are quieter.
  • Which face are you fixing to? An L bracket suits fixing into a vertical face, a step bracket suits a rebated or stepped edge, and the flat-bodied brackets suit a clean top-of-slab fix.
  • Ferry brackets come in three lengths. 3, 4 and 6 inch — the only bracket here where you choose the projection, which matters when the glass line has to sit away from the slab edge.
  • Two V brackets exist for a reason. The standard V has a 70 mm bracket length; the 6-inch version drops to 50 mm. Check which projection your detail actually needs before ordering by name alone.

Bracket spacing and setting out

Centres, edge distance and substrate all have precise meanings here; the glossary of railing terms defines them if any are unfamiliar.

Brackets concentrate the load at points rather than spreading it along the edge, so the number of brackets and the distance between their centres is engineered against the panel size and the design load for the location — not fixed by a rule of thumb. Work the setting out out before anything is drilled, and confirm the anchor's required edge distance: fixing too close to a slab edge is the most common structural failure on balcony work, because the concrete breaks out rather than the bracket.

Brackets or a continuous channel?

Brackets use less material, cost less per metre, and let you release one panel by undoing the clamps on that panel alone. A continuous base channel spreads load along the whole glass edge, which is what lets it carry taller panels, and it gives the seamless line brackets cannot. Grade and finish

Every bracket in the range can be produced in SS 304 or SS 316. SS 304 is correct for interiors and normally sheltered exteriors; specify SS 316 near the coast, around pools, and anywhere else chlorides reach the metal — the reasoning is in our SS 304 vs 316 guide.
