How to Measure for a Railing

Measure the built opening rather than the drawing, take the run at more than one height because walls are rarely plumb, and record where it is out of square instead of averaging it. On a stair, height is measured vertically from the pitch line joining the nosings, not from the tread.
A railing quotation is only as good as the dimensions it was built from, and glass is unforgiving of a bad survey because it cannot be adjusted afterwards. Half an hour with a tape saves a remade panel.
Before you start
- Measure after the structure is built and the floor build-up is known. A 40 mm screed added later changes every height.
- Work in one unit and write it on the sketch. Mixed feet and millimetres is the most common source of error on Indian sites.
- Sketch the run in plan before measuring, and number the sections.
- Photograph each junction — wall returns, newels, changes of level. A photo answers questions a dimension cannot.
Length of the run
Take the total length along the floor line, then take it again at handrail height. If the two differ, the wall is out of plumb and both numbers matter. On a long run measure in sections between fixed points rather than one long pull, and record the diagonal on anything that should be square.
Finished height
Height is measured from the finished floor level, which is the surface people stand on, not the structural slab. If the tiling is not down yet, get the build-up thickness and note it.
On a staircase, height is measured vertically from the pitch line — the notional line joining the stair nosings — not from the middle of a tread. Getting this wrong is the single most common stair measuring error. Typical heights and the code position are in our height and standards guide.
Staircase specifics
- Number of risers and the going, so the rake angle can be calculated.
- Total rise and total going of each flight.
- Landing dimensions, and whether the rail returns, stops, or continues around.
- Whether the flight turns — and if so, by 90 or 180 degrees, because that decides which handrail jointers you need. See our handrail profiles guide.
- What the balustrade fixes to: the tread, the stringer face, or the side of the slab.
What to record for the substrate
The fixing decides as much as the dimensions. Note the substrate at every fixing position — concrete, steel, timber or block — the slab edge thickness, and whether the deck is waterproofed.
