A railing is a safety barrier first and a design feature second. Getting the height, glass and fixing right is what keeps people safe near an edge. This is a practical overview — always confirm the exact requirements against the current National Building Code of India (NBC 2016), the relevant IS standards, and your local authority or a licensed engineer before building, as requirements vary by occupancy, height above ground and jurisdiction.

Why railing height matters

The barrier has to stop a person from falling or slipping through or over it. That means enough height, no easy foot-holds, safe glass, and enough strength to resist a person leaning or being pushed against it.

Typical heights (general practice)

As a widely used guideline — subject to your local code:

  • Residential balconies & landings: commonly around 1 metre (~3–3.5 ft).
  • Staircases: the handrail is typically set around 0.9 m above the pitch line, with guarding to prevent falls.
  • Elevated, commercial or public areas: often require taller barriers than domestic minimums.

Glass safety

Balustrade, guardrail and handrail are not interchangeable words — the railing terms glossary sets out what each one means.

Balustrade glass must be safety glass — toughened, laminated, or laminated-toughened for elevated locations so it retains integrity if it breaks. Never use ordinary annealed glass in a barrier.

Handrails & graspability

Stairs and ramps need a graspable handrail for support; on glass systems a top handrail also protects the exposed glass edge. Ensure continuous handrails without sharp breaks.

Load resistance

Barriers must resist a horizontal load (people leaning/pushing). The required load depends on occupancy (higher for crowds/public areas). This is engineered into the base profile, fixings and glass — which is why the profile, fixing spacing and substrate anchors all matter.

Gaps & climbability

Openings should be small enough that a child cannot pass through, and the design should avoid horizontal members that act as a ladder in areas used by children.

  • Safety glass (toughened/laminated) in a correctly rated profile.
  • Graspable handrail on stairs/ramps.
