LED Handrails: Lighting a Staircase from the Rail
Buying Guide · · By Prince Railing
An LED handrail carries a strip light in a channel inside the profile, so a staircase is lit from the rail itself rather than from a separate fitting. Plan the driver position and the cable route before the rail is fixed, because both run inside the section and neither is easy to add afterwards.
A lit handrail does two things at once: it makes a staircase safer to use at night, and it removes the need for separate step lights or a pendant over the stairwell. It also has to be planned earlier than most railing decisions, because the services run inside the rail.
How the profile works
The section carries an internal channel that takes an LED strip, usually behind a diffuser so you see an even line of light rather than individual points. The rail still functions as a handrail — the lighting is inside the section, not bolted to it.
Our range includes a D-shape LED handrail, a two-slide LED profile and an LED incline handrail cut to follow a stair pitch, alongside a LED bottom profile that lights from the base instead.
Plan these before fixing anything
- Driver location. LED strips need a driver, it has to be accessible for replacement, and it should not be buried behind finished plaster. Decide where it lives at design stage.
- Cable route. The cable runs inside the profile and has to exit somewhere sensible — usually at a newel, a wall return or the bottom of the flight.
- Switching and control. Always on, switched with the stair lighting, or on a motion sensor. A sensor at each end of a flight is the arrangement most people end up preferring.
- Segment lengths. Long runs may need more than one supply point; that affects where joints and jointers fall.
Lighting choices that matter
- Colour temperature. Warm white suits residential interiors; cooler temperatures read as commercial. Pick one and use it throughout, because two temperatures on one staircase are obvious.
- Direction. Light thrown down onto the treads is functional; light thrown up or into the glass is decorative. Decide which job the rail is doing.
- Dimming. If it may ever be wanted, specify a dimmable driver at the outset.
- IP rating outdoors. An external terrace rail needs LED and driver rated for it, and a cable entry detailed to keep water out.
Geometry decides the profile
An LED profile still has to turn the corners your staircase turns. In our range the LED profiles take end caps, wall conceal and 90 and 180 degree jointers, which means a flight returning at a half-landing is catered for — but the fitting availability should be checked against the specific profile before it is chosen. The full matrix is on the top handrails page and the selection logic is in our handrail profiles guide.
Do not forget it is a handrail
On a staircase the rail is a code requirement before it is a light fitting, and it has to be graspable. Check the section is comfortable in the hand as well as attractive lit — the trade-off between grip and profile shape is covered in the profiles guide, and heights in our height and standards guide.
Send us the stair geometry and where power is available and we will confirm the profile, the fittings and the segment lengths.
