Staircase Railing Types and How to Choose One

A staircase railing is a graspable handrail before it is a design feature, so grip and the rake decide the profile before appearance does. Where it fixes — the tread, the stringer face or the slab edge — then narrows the system, and a flight that turns needs the jointers planned before ordering.

Stairs are the hardest railing to specify well, because the barrier is doing three jobs — stopping a fall, being held onto, and following a slope — and the geometry constrains everything.

Grip comes first

On a staircase the handrail is normally a code requirement, and it has to be graspable. That is a dimensional question, not a taste one: a 50 mm or 65 mm round section closes comfortably in the hand; a wide flat rectangular section does not, however good it looks in a render. Where it fixes decides a lot

  • On the tread — the simplest, but it consumes tread width, which matters on a tight domestic stair.
  • To the stringer face — side mount keeps the full walking width. The stringer edge has to take the load in bending.
  • To the side of the slab on a concrete flight — check edge distance before anything is marked, because this is where anchors break concrete out. See anchors and fixings.

Turning flights need planning

This is what holds jobs up. A straight flight needs end caps and wall fittings. A flight that turns needs more:

  • A fix bend for a corner.
  • A 90 degree jointer for a quarter-turn landing.
  • A 180 degree jointer where the flight returns on itself at a half-landing.

If children use the stair

Avoid horizontal members between the floor and the handrail — they work as a ladder. Check the triangular opening at the bottom of a raked panel, which is the gap most often missed on a stair. Full detail in our gaps and child safety guide.

Lighting

An LED handrail lights the treads from the rail itself and removes the need for separate step lights, but the driver and cable route have to be planned before the rail is fixed.
