Poolside is the harshest ordinary environment a railing meets: chlorinated water, splash, and often salt air as well. SS 316 is the correct grade because chlorides are exactly what its molybdenum resists, and specifying SS 304 to save money here is the classic false economy.

A pool barrier has an unusually clear job: keep unsupervised children away from the water, and survive an environment designed to corrode metal. Those two requirements pull the specification in a very specific direction.

Pool barrier requirements — height, gaps, gate self-closing and latching — are set by your local authority and vary considerably. Confirm them for your jurisdiction before designing anything.

Grade is not optional here

Chlorides break down the passive layer that protects stainless steel, and a pool is a chloride environment by design. SS 304 has no molybdenum; SS 316 does, and molybdenum is precisely what resists chloride pitting.

Specify SS 316 for poolside work. It costs roughly 20–35% more than SS 304 and it is the difference between a barrier that still looks right in five years and one that is pitting and staining within one. Indoor pool halls are, if anything, harsher than outdoor ones — chloramine vapour concentrates in the roof space and condenses on cool surfaces, so hardware above an indoor pool deserves the same or better treatment.

Why spigots suit pool decks

Frameless glass on spigots is the standard pool fence for good reasons:

  • Nothing to climb. A full glass panel has no horizontal members and no footholds, which is the point of a pool barrier.
  • Nothing to see through it but water. Supervision from the house is the practical safety benefit people underrate.
  • Water drains between the fixings rather than damming against a continuous channel — the same reasoning as a terrace.
  • Fewer crevices. Point fixings give chlorides fewer places to sit and concentrate than a continuous shoe does.

The trade is that the whole load passes through a few small footprints, so the deck has to take it. Core-drilled spigots need the grout or resin fully cured before any panel is loaded; where the deck is waterproofed, base-plate fixings on a designed upstand avoid breaching the membrane — see anchors and fixings.

What the barrier has to achieve

  • A height set by your local authority, with no climbable footholds on the pool side.
  • Gaps small enough that a young child cannot pass through, including under the panels — see gaps and child safety.
  • Gates that self-close and self-latch, with the latch out of a child's reach, where required locally.
  • Nothing adjacent that can be climbed — furniture, planters, pump housings.
  • Safety glass throughout: toughened, laminated, or laminated-toughened.

Maintenance that actually matters

Rinse poolside hardware with fresh water regularly — every two to four weeks is a reasonable starting point, more in salt air. The aim is removing chlorides before they concentrate, and it is the single most effective thing an owner can do. Never clean with chlorine bleach or hydrochloric-acid products: they are the specific chemistry that attacks stainless. Our cleaning guide has the full list.
