Powder Coating and RAL Colours for Railings

Powder coating is what unlocks colour on a railing — black, bronze, or a shade matched to the window frames. It is also where specifications go wrong most often, because colour gets described in words instead of numbers.

Use the RAL number

RAL is the European colour-reference system, and each colour has a number that means exactly one thing. "Charcoal", "graphite" and "matt black" do not. Give the RAL reference on the order and there is nothing to interpret.

Gloss is a separate decision

The same RAL in matt, satin and gloss looks like three different colours on a balcony. Gloss shows reflections and fingerprint marks but cleans easily; matt hides reflections and shows dust. State the gloss level with the RAL, and if it matters, look at a sample outdoors rather than under showroom lighting.

A word on matt black

It is the strongest trend in premium residential work and it is genuinely striking. It is also the finish that shows every water spot, dust film and fingerprint, particularly on a horizontal top surface. On a terrace in a dusty city it will need wiping far more often than a satin stainless finish — worth saying to a client before they choose it, not after.

Durability outdoors

Powder coating is a barrier finish: it works by keeping moisture and chlorides off the metal, which is exactly why it suits fully exposed and coastal railings. Two consequences follow:

• The barrier has to stay intact. A chip in a coating on carbon steel starts rust. Over stainless the consequence is far less serious, because the metal underneath protects itself.
• Clean it with mild detergent only. Solvents and abrasives attack the coating, and the coating is the protection. See our cleaning guide.

Order a project as one batch

Two runs of the same RAL, coated at different times, can differ enough to be visible when the parts end up next to each other. If a project will be delivered in stages, say so at order stage so it can be produced as a single batch. This is the most common avoidable complaint on coloured work.

Practical notes

• Coating is applied to finished components, so cutting and drilling happen first. A profile cut on site exposes bare metal at the cut end.
• Ask for touch-up material in the same batch for handling marks.
• Colour-matching to an existing element is best done from a physical sample, not a photograph.
• Coating adds a small cost per foot and some lead time — build both into the programme.
