Most residential glass railings use 12 mm toughened glass, which supports a panel up to about 3–3.5 feet. Taller or exposed balconies step up to 17.5 mm laminated glass in a heavy profile, good to roughly 4 feet. 10 mm suits only low internal screens.

Glass thickness is the single most important number in a glass railing. It drives which system you can use, how tall the balustrade can be, and whether the installation meets safety requirements. Here is a plain-English guide.

Toughened vs laminated glass

Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated to be several times stronger than ordinary glass and crumbles into small blunt pieces if broken. Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with an interlayer, so if it breaks the fragments stay in place. For balustrades on stairs, balconies and elevated areas, laminated-toughened glass is the safest choice because it keeps residual load-bearing capacity after breakage.

For elevated balustrades on stairs, balconies and terraces, laminated-toughened glass is the safest specification at any thickness, because the interlayer holds the fragments in place if a pane breaks. Thickness vs support height

Thicker glass and a deeper base profile let the railing carry a taller panel safely. As a rule of thumb in the Prince Railing range: 12 mm glass supports up to ~3–3.5 feet, while 17.5 mm glass in a heavy profile supports up to ~4 feet. Safety and code notes

Balustrade glass should always be safety glass (toughened, laminated, or both), and the top edge is usually finished with a stainless steel handrail for grip.
