SS 202 vs SS 304 Railing: How to Tell and Why It Matters

SS 202 is cheaper because manganese and nitrogen replace most of the nickel that gives SS 304 its corrosion resistance. It can pass for 304 on a showroom sample and then rust within a year on an outdoor balcony, which is why the grade belongs in writing on the invoice.
Ask why one quotation is forty percent below another and the answer is very often the grade. SS 202 and SS 304 look identical when polished, cost very different amounts, and behave very differently once they are outside.
What actually differs
Both are austenitic stainless steels. The difference is what provides that structure. SS 304 uses nickel; SS 202 is a 200-series steel that substitutes manganese and nitrogen for most of the nickel, because nickel is the expensive ingredient.

Less nickel means a less stable passive layer, and that is the entire practical consequence. SS 202 corrodes sooner and more readily than SS 304 in humidity, rain and pollution, and dramatically sooner near salt.
Where each belongs
- SS 202 — genuinely acceptable for dry interior work that never sees weather: an internal staircase in a conditioned building, a decorative screen away from doors and windows.
- SS 304 — the correct default for railings. Interior, covered balconies, terraces, staircases open to weather.

How to tell what you were actually sent
This is the hard part, because a polished 202 sample is convincing.
- The magnet test is not conclusive. Both grades are broadly non-magnetic when annealed, and both can become slightly magnetic after cold working, bending or welding. A weak pull proves nothing on its own.
- Ask for the mill test certificate. This is the reliable route. It states the composition of the heat the material came from. A supplier who cannot produce one is telling you something.
- Chemical spot testing by a laboratory or with a proprietary test kit will separate the grades, and portable XRF analysers give an immediate read where a project warrants it.
- Watch the first monsoon. Not a test you want to rely on, but 202 in an exposed position frequently shows staining and pitting inside a year where 304 does not.
Put the grade in writing
The single most useful thing a buyer can do is name the grade on the purchase order and ask for certification against it. "Stainless steel railing" on a quotation is not a specification — it covers everything from 202 to 316, across a wide price range.
