Toughened vs Laminated Glass for Railings

Toughened glass is heat-treated to be several times stronger and breaks into small blunt granules. Laminated glass bonds panes with an interlayer so fragments stay in place. For an elevated balustrade the right answer is usually both — laminated-toughened — because a barrier that empties its opening when it breaks is no longer a barrier.
These two words get used as if they were alternatives on a menu. They describe different things: toughening is a heat treatment, lamination is a construction. A pane can be either, neither, or both, and for balustrades the answer is usually both.
Toughened glass
Toughened (tempered) glass is heated and then cooled rapidly, putting the surface into compression. That makes it several times stronger than ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness, and it changes how it fails: instead of long sharp shards it breaks into small blunt granules.
The consequence people forget is what happens next. A broken toughened pane leaves the opening empty. On an internal screen that is a mess to clear up. On a third-floor balcony it is an unguarded edge.
Laminated glass
Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with a plastic interlayer. When it breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments together and the pane generally stays in its frame with some residual capacity. It is heavier and costs more, and it is what you want at height.

Which to specify
- Low internal screens and partitions — toughened is normally sufficient. Nothing falls anywhere if it breaks.
- Balconies, terraces and staircases — laminated-toughened. The barrier must remain a barrier after a breakage, and this is the specification that does that.
- Anywhere over a walkway or public area — laminated-toughened, without argument. Falling granules from height are a hazard in themselves.
- Never annealed glass in a barrier. Ordinary float glass breaks into large sharp pieces and has no place in a balustrade at any thickness.
How this interacts with thickness
Thickness and glass type are separate decisions that have to agree with each other and with the profile. 12 mm toughened is the workhorse of residential balustrades; taller and more exposed runs step up to 17.5 mm laminated in a heavier base. Ordering notes
Both types are cut, drilled and edge-worked before toughening. Once a pane is toughened nothing can be done to it — details are in our guide to cutting and drilling toughened glass. Order every panel at its finished size with cut-outs already specified, and have the edges polished on anything visible.
