SS Railing Pipe Size and Thickness: mm, Gauge and What Goes Where

Buying Guide · · By Prince Railing

Most stainless steel railings in India use round pipe of 38.1, 42.4 or 50.8 mm outside diameter, or square tube of 25, 40 or 50 mm, with a wall thickness of 1.2, 1.5 or 2.0 mm. That is roughly 18, 16 and 14 gauge. Wall thickness is the number that gets quietly reduced, so check it.

In one line: a railing pipe is described by two numbers, the outside size and the wall thickness, and a typical home railing uses a 42.4 or 50.8 mm round top rail in 1.5 mm wall. The sizes below are general Indian trade practice and approximate; they are not a code requirement or a structural design.

Common SS railing pipe sizes

Railing tube is sold by outside diameter (OD) for round sections and by side for square ones. The round sizes come from inch sizes, which is why the millimetre figures look odd.

Railing pipe thickness in mm and gauge

Wall thickness is quoted in millimetres or in gauge. In the Indian trade, gauge normally means Standard Wire Gauge, where a higher number is a thinner wall.

Approximate conversions. Gauge sizes are rounded differently by different mills, so ask for millimetres.
GaugeApprox. thicknessUsually sold asTypical use
20 gauge0.9 mm0.9–1.0 mmDecorative trim only; too thin for a rail people lean on
18 gauge1.2 mm1.2 mmBalusters and mid rails; light interior rails
16 gauge1.6 mm1.5 or 1.6 mmThe usual choice for residential top rails and posts
14 gauge2.0 mm2.0 mmPosts, commercial and public railings, long spans

So "how thick is a railing" has a short answer: the pipe wall is usually 1.2 to 2.0 mm, and 1.5 mm is the common residential figure.

Which part uses which size

  • Top rail or handrail. 42.4 or 50.8 mm round, or a 40 to 50 mm square, in 1.5 mm wall or more. This is the part people grip and lean on. If the names are unclear, see balustrade vs railing vs handrail.
  • Posts. The same sizes as the top rail or one step down, and preferably the thickest wall in the railing, because the posts carry the load to the floor through their base plates and anchors.
  • Mid rails and balusters. Small round or 25 mm square tube, often in 1.2 mm wall. Keep balusters vertical where children use the space, since horizontal bars can be climbed.

Why thin-wall pipe dents and flexes

How much a rail bends depends on both its diameter and its wall. A larger diameter adds stiffness quickly; wall thickness adds it roughly in proportion. Dent resistance is mostly about the wall alone. That is why a 50.8 mm pipe in 1.0 mm wall can look substantial and still dent when a gas cylinder or a piece of furniture knocks it, and why thin posts rock at the base plate weld.

Thin wall also causes trouble in fabrication. It burns through and distorts during welding, and it leaves little metal to grind and polish at the joints, so the welds are where a light railing fails or rusts first.

How to check what you are being quoted

  1. Get three things in writing: grade, outside size and wall thickness in millimetres. "2 inch heavy pipe" is not a specification. Our guide to what a railing quotation includes lists the rest.
  2. Measure a cut end. A vernier caliper on an open pipe end reads the wall directly. Nominal 1.5 mm tube that measures 1.2 mm is a different product.
  3. Weigh a length. For round stainless tube, weight in kg per metre is approximately (OD − wall) × wall × 0.025, with both in mm. A 50.8 mm pipe is about 1.84 kg per metre in 1.5 mm wall and about 1.48 in 1.2 mm.
  4. Confirm the grade separately. A thick pipe in the wrong grade still rusts. See SS 202 vs SS 304.

Prince Railing handrail sizes

Our top handrails are made as profiles for glass and wall-mounted railings, and are named by their outside size: 50 mm and 65 mm round; 25×25, 40×40 and 50×50 mm square; and 60×40, 70×30 and 80×30 mm rectangular, along with oval, triangle, slim and LED sections. The full list is on the top handrails page, and the handrail profiles guide explains which fittings each one takes. For the wall thickness of a particular profile, ask us and we will confirm it with the quotation.

Looking for glass railing thickness?

If your question was about the glass and not the pipe, the answer is different: 12 mm toughened glass is the residential standard and taller or exposed runs step up to 17.5 mm laminated. The chart is in the glass railing thickness guide, and whether glass is a safe choice is covered in is glass railing safe. Once it is installed, how to clean a glass railing covers the upkeep.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no single standard, but the common trade sizes in India are 38.1, 42.4 and 50.8 mm outside diameter in round pipe and 25, 40 and 50 mm in square tube. Top rails are usually 42.4 or 50.8 mm round.

Railing pipe wall thickness is usually 1.2, 1.5 or 2.0 mm. 1.5 mm is the common choice for residential top rails and posts, 1.2 mm is used for balusters and mid rails, and 2.0 mm for posts and commercial work.

About 1.6 mm in Standard Wire Gauge, and it is commonly sold as 1.5 or 1.6 mm tube. 18 gauge is about 1.2 mm and 14 gauge about 2.0 mm. A higher gauge number means a thinner wall.

It is commonly used for balusters and mid rails. For the top rail and posts, which people lean on and which carry the load to the floor, 1.5 mm or thicker is the usual trade choice. Confirm any safety-critical railing with an engineer.

Measure the wall at a cut end with a vernier caliper, or weigh a known length. A 50.8 mm round stainless pipe weighs about 1.84 kg per metre in 1.5 mm wall and about 1.48 kg per metre in 1.2 mm.
