Wall Mounted Handrail for Stairs: Profiles, Brackets and Fixing
Buying Guide · · By Prince Railing
A wall mounted handrail is a rail carried on brackets fixed to the wall, with no balustrade below it. Use one on stairs between two walls, opposite a glass balustrade, and along ramps and corridors. A round section that the hand can close around is the safest choice.
Not every staircase needs a balustrade, but every staircase needs something to hold. Where a flight runs alongside a wall, the simplest answer is a handrail carried on brackets off that wall. It takes up very little width, costs far less than a full railing, and is the single most useful thing you can add to a stair used by older people.
When a wall handrail is used
| Situation | What the wall rail does | Profile to look at |
|---|---|---|
| Stairs between two walls | It is the only handhold on the flight | Round, 50 mm or 65 mm |
| Stair with a glass balustrade on the open side | A second rail on the wall side, so either hand has support | The same profile as the rail over the glass |
| Ramps | Steady support along the slope | Round or oval |
| Corridors in homes, clinics and hotels | A level rail to steady a walk | Round, oval or slim |
| Dark or feature staircases | Handhold and stair lighting in one | LED profile |
On a stair with frameless glass on the open side, the glass is usually held in a base channel (see the aluminium profile glass railing guide) and capped with a top handrail. Running the same section along the wall gives the stair a matched pair. The different stair arrangements are compared in our staircase railing types guide.
Choosing the profile
Our top handrail range is made to cap glass balustrades, and the same profiles are used wall-mounted on brackets as standalone grab rails. For a rail whose whole purpose is to be held, grip decides the choice.
- Round. The 50 Mm Round Handrail and 65 Mm Round Handrail close comfortably in the hand. This is what most stair handrails end up being and it is the first choice for elderly users.
- Oval. The Small Oval Handrail and Big Oval Handrail are round enough to hold and flat enough to look contemporary.
- Slim. The Slim Handrail has the least visual weight, for corridors and feature walls where the rail should stay quiet.
- Square and rectangular. These look crisp but are less comfortable to run a hand along. Keep them for places where the rail is more of a guide than a support.
The full comparison, including which fittings each profile takes, is in the handrail profiles guide.
Graspability
A handrail works only if the hand can close around it and slide along it without letting go. Three things make that possible:
- A section the fingers can wrap. A wide flat rail can be leaned on but not gripped in a slip.
- Clearance behind the rail. The gap to the wall must leave room for knuckles, including on rough plaster or stone cladding.
- Brackets that support from below. A bracket arm that comes up under the rail lets the hand pass over each fixing. A bracket that wraps the rail forces the user to let go at every support.
Handrail brackets, spacing and fixing
A handrail bracket is a small arm that stands the rail off the wall. Whether a bracket and a profile fit each other has to be checked, because some sections are flat underneath and some are curved. Confirm the bracket with us for the profile you choose.
Spacing is set by the stiffness of the rail and by what the wall is made of, not by a fixed rule. In general practice:
- Put a bracket close to each end of the rail and close to each joint or bend.
- Space the brackets between them evenly, closely enough that the rail does not flex when pulled.
- Fix into structure. Solid concrete and solid brick hold an anchor well. Hollow block and perforated brick need chemical anchors with a sleeve, and plaster alone holds nothing.
- Scan for concealed wiring and pipes before drilling a staircase wall.
- Use stainless fixings with a stainless rail.
The anchor types and substrate checks are in our anchors and fixings guide. A rail that pulls out of the wall when someone falls against it is worse than no rail, so do not economise here.
Height
General practice in India sets a staircase handrail at roughly 0.9 m above the pitch line, which is the line joining the front edges of the steps. On a ramp or in a corridor the rail runs parallel to the floor. Confirm the height for your building type in our height and safety standards guide, and mark the line from finished step and floor levels, not from the bare structure.
End returns and continuity
An open rail end catches sleeves, bag straps and dupattas, and it is a hard point to walk into. Finish each end by returning the rail into the wall or by fitting an end cap. Endcap and wall conceal fittings are available across our whole handrail range, so every profile can be closed off or taken into the wall.
The rail should also run the whole flight without breaks, including around landings. Fix bends and 90 and 180 degree jointers do that, but not every profile takes every fitting, so check the stair geometry against the profile before ordering.
The LED option
An LED handrail carries a strip light in a channel inside the profile, so the stair is lit from the rail. On an enclosed stair between two walls, where daylight is poor, that is a real safety gain for older users. The range includes the D Shape Led Handrail, the Two Slide Led Handrail and the Led Incline Handrail, which is cut to follow a stair pitch. Plan the driver position and cable route before the rail is fixed. The LED handrail guide covers both.
Checklist for a handrail for elderly users
- A rail on both sides of the stair where the width allows.
- A round section that the hand closes around.
- Continuous from the bottom step to the top, including landings.
- Ends returned to the wall or capped.
- Brackets under the rail, fixed into structure.
- A matt or satin finish, which hides fingerprints and gives less glare than mirror polish.
- Good light on the treads, from the rail or otherwise.
- The same care at other edges in the house. A full-height window that opens needs a guard too. See the Juliet balcony guide.
Send us the stair layout, the wall construction and the rail length, and we will suggest a profile and the fittings to go with it.
