Staircase Railing Cost in India (2026): Price Per Running Foot

Buying Guide · · By Prince Railing

A staircase railing in India starts from the same 2026 per-foot ranges as a level run: about ₹700–₹1,200 for SS 304 pipe and ₹900–₹2,500 for glass, depending on the system. A stair then costs more per foot than a balcony because the glass is raked, a handrail is required, and turns need extra fittings.

There is no separate market rate for a staircase. A stair railing is priced from the same per-running-foot ranges as any other railing, and then lands higher than a level run of the same system because a stair needs things a balcony does not. This guide gives the starting ranges, explains what a stair adds, and shows how to measure a flight so the footage in your quote is right.

The figures below are the indicative 2026 market ranges from our SS railing price guide. They are not a quotation, and they were published for standard runs, so treat them as the starting point for a stair.

Starting ranges for a staircase railing

Indicative 2026 market ranges for material and standard installation. A stair usually prices above a level run of the same system.
Stair railing typeIndicative range (₹ / running foot)On a stair
MS (mild steel) railing₹250 – ₹600Lowest first cost; needs repainting
SS 304 pipe railing (no glass)₹700 – ₹1,200The most economical stainless stair
Glass on a bracket system₹900 – ₹1,600The most economical glass stair
Glass on a continuous channel₹1,200 – ₹2,200Seamless line; the most material per foot
Frameless glass on spigots₹1,400 – ₹2,500Premium, open look

SS 316 adds 20–35% over SS 304, which matters on an external stair near the coast. Which of these types suits your stair is a separate question, covered in our staircase railing types guide.

Why a stair costs more per foot than a level run

We do not publish a fixed stair uplift, because it depends on the flight. These are the items that create it.

  • Raked glass. A balcony panel is a rectangle. A stair panel is cut to the slope of the flight, so every panel is drawn and often templated individually. Toughened glass cannot be cut or adjusted afterwards, so a wrong angle means a remade panel.
  • The handrail is not optional. On a level run a top handrail is recommended. On a staircase a graspable handrail is required, so its cost is always in the stair figure. Profiles and grip are covered in the handrail profiles guide, and the range is on the top handrails page.
  • More fittings. A straight balcony needs end caps. A flight that turns needs a fix bend at a corner, a 90 degree jointer at a quarter-turn landing and a 180 degree jointer at a half-landing. These are often left out of a low quote.
  • Fixing conditions. A stair railing fixes to the tread, the stringer face or the side of the slab. Each needs its own bracket or anchor detail, and side fixing calls for a check on edge distance. See anchors and fixings.
  • Setting out. Heights are taken from the pitch line joining the nosings, and every fixing has to follow that line. This takes longer than marking a level run, and installers also work on steps instead of a flat floor. The method is in our setting out and tolerances guide.

A straight flight between two walls with a round handrail sits close to the level-run figure. A stair with two landings, a half-turn and frameless glass sits well above it.

How to measure the running feet of a staircase

Stair railing is measured along the slope, not along the floor plan. The sloping length is longer than the plan length, and quoting from the plan is a common way to under-budget.

  1. Measure the total rise of the flight (floor to floor or floor to landing) and the total going (the horizontal length of the flight).
  2. The sloping length is the square root of rise squared plus going squared. For a flight with a 10 ft rise and a 12 ft going: 10 × 10 = 100, 12 × 12 = 144, 100 + 144 = 244, and the square root of 244 is about 15.6 ft.
  3. Add the length of railing on each landing, measured level.
  4. Count the turns, and note whether each is 90 or 180 degrees.

As a starting figure, 15.6 ft of glass on brackets at ₹900–₹1,600 per running foot is 15.6 × 900 = ₹14,040 to 15.6 × 1,600 = ₹24,960. That is the footage at level-run rates, before the stair items above, so it is a base for budgeting and not a stair quotation. The full survey method, including where to take heights from, is in how to measure for a railing.

Keeping stair railing cost under control

  • Decide the handrail profile early, and check that it takes the bends and jointers your stair needs. Not every profile takes every fitting.
  • Choose glass on brackets where a seamless base line is not essential.
  • Use SS 304 on an internal stair. SS 316 is for coastal and poolside exposure.
  • Send accurate geometry. A provisional quote built on a guessed pitch gets revised upward.
  • If you want lit treads, plan an LED handrail before the rail is fixed, because the driver and cable route cannot easily be added later.

What to send for a stair quotation

Number of risers and the going, total rise, landing sizes, whether the flight turns and by how much, what the railing fixes to, and whether the stair is indoor or outdoor. Make sure every quote you compare lists the same fittings, using the checklist in what a railing quotation should include.

Send the stair geometry and we will specify the profile and fittings and quote the hardware directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A stair railing starts from the indicative 2026 per-running-foot ranges for a level run: about ₹700–₹1,200 for SS 304 pipe, ₹900–₹1,600 for glass on brackets, ₹1,200–₹2,200 for a continuous glass channel and ₹1,400–₹2,500 for frameless spigot glass. A stair usually prices above a level run of the same system.

The glass is cut to the slope of the flight instead of as rectangles, a graspable handrail is required, turns need bends and jointers, and setting out along the pitch line takes longer than marking a level run.

Measure along the slope, not the floor plan. The sloping length is the square root of rise squared plus going squared. A 10 ft rise and 12 ft going gives about 15.6 ft. Add the railing on each landing.

Glass on point brackets, at an indicative ₹900–₹1,600 per running foot before stair-specific items. The brackets are visible, and a single panel is easy to service.

It should be, because a graspable handrail is required on a staircase. Check that the quotation names the handrail profile and lists the bends, jointers and end caps separately.
