MS Railing Price Per Running Foot in India (2026)

Buying Guide · · By Prince Railing

A mild steel (MS) railing costs about ₹250 to ₹600 per running foot in India, including fabrication, primer, paint and fitting. Plain pipe designs sit at the bottom of that range and ornamental work at the top. SS 304 pipe railing runs ₹700 to ₹1,200, so MS is roughly half the price upfront but needs repainting every few years.

The short answer: an MS railing is quoted at ₹250 to ₹600 per running foot in most Indian cities, and that figure normally covers the steel, fabrication, a primer-and-enamel finish and installation. Where a quote lands inside that range depends on four things: how much steel goes into each foot, how much cutting and welding the design needs, what finish is applied, and what the installer charges on site. Everything below is a market range, not a quotation; the only price that matters is the one written against your drawing.

MS railing price by design type

"MS railing" covers everything from a three-pipe balcony guard to a CNC-cut panel, and the price spread follows the design. The figures are per running foot, fitted, with a primer and enamel paint finish.

DesignIndicative price per running footWhat drives it
Plain pipe or square-tube MS (2–3 horizontal members)₹250 – ₹350Lightest steel, fastest to fabricate
Vertical baluster MS (bars at 100 mm centres)₹300 – ₹420More welds per foot; child-safe spacing
Designer or ornamental MS (scrolls, laser-cut panels, CNC patterns)₹350 – ₹600Cutting and finishing labour dominates
MS frame with toughened glass infill₹450 – ₹600 for the frame8–10 mm toughened glass is quoted separately, usually ₹120 – ₹200 per sq ft
MS posts with wooden handrail₹400 – ₹600 plus handrailTimber species and polish set the handrail price

If you are not sure what the material is in the first place, start with what MS railing means: it is ordinary mild steel, which is why it is cheap and why it rusts.

What moves an MS railing quote

  • Steel weight per foot. Fabricators price MS by the kilogram, so a 25 × 25 mm square tube in 1.2 mm wall costs far less per foot than a 40 × 40 mm post in 2 mm. Ask for the section sizes and wall thickness on the quote; "heavy" and "light" mean nothing without numbers. The same logic applies to stainless, and our pipe size and thickness guide explains which section does which job.
  • Design complexity. Every extra cut, bend and weld is labour. A plain three-pipe railing might take an hour per 10 ft; an ornamental panel can take a day.
  • Finish. Red-oxide primer with two coats of enamel is the default and the cheapest. Powder coating usually adds ₹50 – ₹100 per running foot because the railing has to go to a coating plant, but it lasts several times longer outdoors. Galvanising before painting adds more again and is the right call near the coast.
  • Site labour and access. Fixing into a 100 mm slab edge with chemical anchors costs more than bolting to a parapet wall, and anything above the first floor adds scaffolding or hoisting time.
  • City. Metro labour rates run higher than tier-two cities; the steel price itself is fairly uniform across India.

10 ft, 20 ft and 30 ft examples

Three typical jobs, priced in the middle of each range so you can sanity-check a quote. Measure the railing as a running-foot length along the top rail; how to measure for a railing shows where corners and returns are counted.

JobRate usedMS railing costSame run in SS 304 pipe
10 ft window or small balcony, plain pipe₹300 / ft₹3,000₹9,000 at ₹900 / ft
20 ft staircase, designer panels₹450 / ft₹9,000₹18,000 at ₹900 / ft
30 ft balcony, vertical balusters₹350 / ft₹10,500₹27,000 at ₹900 / ft

A 30 ft steel railing therefore costs roughly ₹7,500 to ₹18,000 in MS and ₹21,000 to ₹36,000 in SS 304, depending on design. The SS figures come from our SS railing price per running foot guide; staircases carry their own rules on landings and returns, covered in staircase railing cost in India.

MS or SS: which is costly over ten years?

This is the question behind most "MS vs SS price difference" searches, and the honest answer is that it depends on where the railing lives. Mild steel is only protected by its paint. Once the paint chips, moisture reaches bare steel and rust starts under the film, so an MS railing needs repainting every two to three years inland and every year or so near the coast. Repainting a railing in place costs about ₹60 – ₹100 per running foot each time for surface preparation, primer and enamel.

30 ft balcony railingMS, inlandMS, coastalSS 304
Installed cost₹10,500₹10,500₹27,000
Repaints in 10 years4 × ₹2,400 = ₹9,6009 × ₹2,400 = ₹21,600None; wash only
10-year total₹20,100₹32,100₹27,000

So MS stays cheaper over a decade in a dry inland city, provided the owner actually repaints on schedule. On a sea-facing balcony it costs more than stainless by year seven or eight, and it will have looked rusty for most of that time. The full comparison of rust, strength and looks is in MS vs SS railing. Note that this assumes genuine SS 304; a cheaper SS 202 railing will stain outdoors and sits between the two, which is why checking the grade matters before you compare prices.

When MS is the right choice

  • Interior staircases in a dry home, where there is no rain and the paint will last.
  • Ornamental work. Scrolls, leaves and heritage patterns are far cheaper to make in mild steel, and the painted finish is part of the look.
  • Rental or short-life buildings where a ten-year horizon is not the buyer's problem.
  • Tight budgets on large runs such as compound walls and terraces, where ₹500 per foot of difference adds up to lakhs.

It is the wrong choice for sea-facing balconies, pool surrounds and anywhere the owner will not keep up repainting. For those, an SS 304 pipe railing at ₹700 – ₹1,200 per foot, or a glass railing at ₹900 – ₹2,500, is the cheaper decision over the life of the building. A worked balcony budget for each material is in our balcony railing cost calculation.

Getting a quote you can compare

Ask every fabricator for the same five things: section sizes and wall thickness, the finish (primer and enamel, powder coat, or galvanised and painted), the anchor type, the running-foot length they have measured, and whether glass or a timber handrail is included or extra. A quote that lists all five can be compared; one that just says "MS railing, ₹400 per foot" cannot. Our railing quotation checklist covers the rest.

Prince Railing manufactures stainless steel railing systems rather than mild steel, so if your budget stretches to SS 304 or you want a glass system, see our products or ask for a quote with your measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Between ₹250 and ₹600 per running foot, fitted and painted. Plain pipe designs cost ₹250 – ₹350, vertical baluster designs ₹300 – ₹420, and ornamental or laser-cut panels ₹350 – ₹600. Glass infill and timber handrails are quoted on top.

About ₹7,500 to ₹18,000 in mild steel depending on the design, and ₹21,000 to ₹36,000 in SS 304 pipe. Glass railing systems for the same run start around ₹27,000.

SS is costlier to buy: SS 304 pipe railing is ₹700 – ₹1,200 per foot against ₹250 – ₹600 for MS. Over ten years the gap narrows because MS needs repainting every two to three years, and on a coastal site MS ends up costing more than stainless.

Yes, usually by ₹50 – ₹100 per running foot over primer and enamel, because the fabricated railing goes to a coating plant. It lasts several times longer outdoors, so it pays back on exposed railings.

Fabricators cost it per kilogram of steel plus labour, but quote it to customers per running foot. Always ask for the section sizes and wall thickness so two per-foot prices can be compared fairly.
